The Federation of Alberta Gas Co-ops Ltd. is the umbrella organization for member natural gas co-op, municipal, First Nation utilities across Alberta. These utilities form the worlds largest rural natural gas system.

The Alberta Utilities Commission regulates the utilities sector, natural gas and electricity markets to protect social, economic, and environmental interests of Alberta where competitive market forces do not.
Under the Gas Distribution Act, the Rural Utilities section is responsible for ensuring the safe construction, operation, and maintenance of all gas distribution systems, conducting technical reviews, issuing approvals, development of policy issues respecting rural gas utility operations, and business practices and regulation of gas co-ops.
